Gunther was the name of a former companion of a prior incarnation the Doctor. He is described as "short and cute, in that way men only very occasionally pull off."
Death and Impact[]
He died in the Doctor's arms, leaving her to wonder how many times she could endure the death of a companion. He then fades from history and the Doctor's memory, and it is strongly implied through a diary entry that the Doctor herself erased him from history.
Susan reveals his name to a later incarnation of the Doctor who had named her cat Gunther. (Perfection)
