Season 2 began on January 17th, 2020. Production on this season started in October 2019, with the recording of the first serial of the season. It consists of 20 episodes comprising 9 serials (1 x 3-parter, 8 x 2-parters) and 1 "extended-length Doctor Who Day Special".
Overview[]
At the end of season 1, the Doctor and her companions have been captured by the Time Lords following the events at Colony 47. Season 2 follows their escape, their rescue of Roman from his collapsing TARDIS, and their continuing adventures in space and time as the Doctor learns how Rassilon has corrupted Time Lord regeneration for his own ends. The season also introduces a new villain in the form of the Keeper of the Matrix, later revealed to be the version of Travis from the parallel universe Travis visited at the end of the first season.
Season 2 also saw some cast changes. Melinda-Catherine Gross left before production of the season began, however the departure of her character, Amelia Earhart, was woven into the narrative had a lasting impact on the characters. Châu Kate Lê joined the series as new companion Carrie Vu, originally from Los Angeles circa October 2019, in the season's sixth serial, Swipe Right.
Production[]
The show was initially recorded at Geeky Teas & Games in Burbank, California up until March 2020 when the show shifted to remote recording due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last serial to be recorded on location was Family. With few exceptions, serials tend to be recorded in one session, and the group typically meets once a month to record a serial. The season finale was recorded in August, 2020, while the show's Doctor Who Special was recorded in October.
The first serial of the season includes the show's very first guest player - David Blue, best known for his roles in Stargate Universe and Henry Danger, appeared in the season's debut serial, Active Decay. David's involvement, as well as the title of the serial, were revealed in a tweet on November 22nd.
The second guest player, Dino Andrade, was revealed on social media in March 2020. Andrade appeared as a new incarnation of the Master. Châu Kate Lê was originally the third guest player, but stayed on a regular cast member.
Several cameo appearances are made by guests who recorded their dialogue at a time after the session was completed. The first such cameos were actually appearances made by past Doctors, albeit in the form of holographic recordings and diary entries in the episode Perfection. The War Doctor and Twelfth Doctor appear, played by Ben Paddon and Guillaume Babey respectively, while new Doctors - set prior to the podcast's Doctor but established as existing sometime after the Doctors seen in the TV series - are played by Elisa Melendez and Mikey Neumann.
The previous Doctor alluded to in the first season of the podcast makes his debut, portrayed by Joseph Scrimshaw. Scrimshaw also reprises his role as the Previous Doctor at the end of The Enemy of the Good, and appears as a guest player in Recursion of the Daleks. Goldie Chan also appears as a future version of Romana.
Several classic Doctor Who aliens and enemies make their debut in The Game of Rassilon, including the Cybermen, the Master and the Daleks. The Time Lords also return, with Rassilon appearing in the finale and stories set on Gallifrey serving as bookends for the season. Further consequences of Travis' exposure to the Wire in the season 1 finale are explored, with the arrival of an alternate-universe "Dark Travis" also serving as part of the narrative spine of the season.
